New World: Zinfandel & Pinotage

Nine medals (one of them Gold) last year; eight medals (one of them Gold) this year. This was a solid performance from two of the more awkward grape varieties in the wine canon.
On the plus side, the teams were heartened by the fact that the Pinotages were mostly pretty good, and that the alcohol levels in Zin seem to be on the way down. On the downside, it would have been nice to have had a few more Silvers genuinely jostling for a place on the Gold List. Well done to Gnarly Head, though, which regularly picks up a higher-end medal here.
From the Tasting Teams
‘I was pleasantly surprised by the Pinotages. These wines have been improving a lot over the last two years.’ Jeremie Guiraud, Lords of the Manor
‘Zin is not a must-have even for us. I keep an entry level one just in case, plus one or two premium Zinfandels, but essentially it’s an overlooked wine.’ James Hocking, The Vineyard Group
‘I was expecting to see more alcohol, but throughout the whole Zin flight it was all quite integrated.’ Charles Van Wyk, FJB Hotels
