FRANCE: Chablis

2015: Gold 2 Silver 6 Bronze 2 Commended 7
2014: Gold 5 Silver 7 Bronze 2 Commended 3

After Chablis’ record-breaking effort last year, built on the beautiful 2012 vintage, it was back to normality this year. Still, our tasters were happy with what they found, and while the dearth of genuinely cheap medal winners was depressing (well done Louis Moreau and Kingsland), there were no doubts raised about this region’s bankability.

From the Tasting Teams

‘This was a very consistent flight, with no bad wine. Often the punter doesn’t know the difference between £14 and £25 Chablis, but some do, so the wine really has to deliver at higher prices.’ Xavier Rousset MS, Texture, 28°-50°

‘If you can buy a decent Chablis for under a £10 you are on to a winner.’ Charles Pashby-Taylor, Dabbous

‘Chablis needs minerality and real complexity, otherwise for the same money you can go elsewhere and find really good Chardonnay.’ Caroline Brangé, 28°-50° Mayfair

‘Everyone has their own idea about what Chablis should be, with some lean, some more rounded and mature. If you have room on the list it’s definitely a good idea to feature different styles across different price points.’
Garry Clark, The Victorian Chop House Company

France: Chablis

Domaine Louis Moreau, Chablis 2014, Burgundy, France

Gold medal winner

The perfect Chablis for gastropubs and neighbourhood restaurants, this kicks off with inviting aromas of orchard and blossom. ‘Classic lime and mineral profile, with notes of elderflower, apples and pears on the palate. Good by the glass,’ said Caroline Brangé of 28°-50° Mayfair, with Andrea Fasan of La Petite Maison adding: ‘Clean and crisp, juicy and long.’

£8.29 Kingsland

Louis Michel & Fils, Chablis 1er Cru, Forêts 2011, Burgundy, France

Gold medal winner

Classic minerality and rich mid-palate set this apart. ‘Intense, leesy nose with yellow apple notes, a high level of minerality on the palate, and good acidity keeping freshness in a rich palate,’ said Gareth Ferreira of Launceston Place. ‘Vibrant nose, very peachy on the palate, with a beautiful texture,’ added Debbie Smith of 21212.

£18.96 Enotria&Coe

Albert Bichot, Domaine Long-Depaquit, Chablis 1er Cru, Les Lys 2013, Burgundy, France

£15.00 Soho Wine Supply

Daniel Séguinot, Chablis 1er Cru, Fourchaume 2012, Burgundy, France
