The Sem/Sauv category has often been one of the quieter ones in the Sommelier Wine Awards, so we weren’t too surprised with the low level of entries here. Saddened, but not surprised. What did take us aback, though, was that 60% of our medals went not to Australia, but to the Cape. How will the Aussies react to having Saffer tanks parked on their lawn?

FROM THE TASTING TEAMS

‘When they are Semillon dominated, if they’re released too early they don’t show that toastiness and that lanolin that you expect from good Semillon.’ Olivier Marie, team leader

‘Overall the quality was good. I can see these wines with pork dishes, lighter dishes, fish, seafood and cold starters.’ Antonio Cuadros, The Don Restaurant

New World: Semillon & Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc

Spier, Creative Block 2, Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon 2016, Western Cape, South Africa

Gold medal winner

‘Lots of zing!’ said Caroline Catering’s Richard Brooks as this Sauvignon-Semillon blend was led to the Gold podium. Antonio Cuadros of The Don Restaurant found it ‘very fruity, with peachy strawberry flavours but a nice leesy quality to it, too’, while Coworth Park Ascot’s Michael Fiducia highlighted its ‘cool fermentation, pear drops and light spritz’. Hakkasan Group’s Olivier Gasselin, meanwhile, found it both ‘floral and crisp’, with team leader Simon Woods praising its ‘gentle pear and spicy notes’.

£8.99 Frederic Robinson

Peccavi, Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon 2014, Margaret River, Western Australia, Australia

An approachable, good all-purpose white, our panel said, with Antonio Cuadros of The Don Restaurant finding it ‘fruity, elegant and well balanced, with a smoky character and touches of oak’, and Coworth Park Ascot’s Michael Fiducia enjoying its ‘clean and fresh nose and pleasantly refreshing palate’.
