ITALY: SICILY & SARDINIA – RED

2016 Gold: 1 Silver: 6 Bronze: 9 Commended: 3
We’re charitable on the Sommelier Wine Awards. That there’s a lot of great wine in Southern Italy is obvious by the high Gold count here. That there’s plenty of rubbish to wade through to get there is also obvious by the faces of some of our tasters when they’ve finished their flights.
Along with the bigger, chunkier Nero d’Avolas, there was some truly beautiful wine here – the Frappatos, Nerello Mascaleses, Cannonaus. Great, characterful examples that this part of Italy can still produce at a fantastic price.
FROM THE TASTING TEAMS
‘I think Sicily is the most interesting region in Italy at the moment.’ Kelvin McCabe, Yauatcha
‘The light is on but nobody’s home. There’s no identity here. No direction, all over the place.’ Christopher Delalonde MS, Bleeding Heart Group
‘The value is extraordinary. I list about eight or nine from Sicily and Sardinia – they’re fun regions but guests seem to skip it, so from a somm’s point of view it’s fun to sell those wines.’ Stefan Kobald, Jason Atherton Group
‘I was expecting a little bit more consistency from the Nero d’Avolas.’ Andrea Briccarello, team leader
