There’s always a somewhat high-spirited nature to this part of the competition; a joyous intermingling of grape varieties and wine styles, united by a spirited acidity and a joyous drinkability. After the record heights of last year’s five Golds, this year was always likely to be a step back, but 23 awards was a good performance for a region that was hit by frost in 2017, and there was a good spread of styles to play with.

While our Gold winners were all excellent, if it’s value for money you’re after you might want to look in the Silver section; some great wines here that can still make it on to a wine list at under £30. The only disappointment? Pinot Grigio, which our tasters thought would be both better and cheaper.

FROM THE TASTING TEAMS

‘Pinot Grigio is a challenging grape. It’s very popular, but there’s not always a lot of quality behind it. There were a few here that I could put on a list, but they’re not versatile wines when it comes to food. They’re just wines to drink.’ Manuel Ribeiro, The Bybrook at The Manor House Hotel

‘We had a good blend of varieties here, and some blends, that all showed really lovely purity. You could put these with almost any dish. There’s enough structure and flavour, and they weren’t too oaked either.’ Annette Scarfe MW, team leader

‘Below £10 these are the classic supermarket Pinot Grigio, so you’d get exactly the same quality as you would at home, but in a restaurant they’d be three or four times the price.’ Lionel Periner, team leader

‘Unless you’re a very fancy Italian place you wouldn’t have a variety of Pinot Grigios. It serves a purpose. People like it, and you make money out of it.’ Chris Delalonde MS, Bleeding Heart Group

‘These north-eastern whites are an area where Italy is very strong and should be competing with New Zealand and France. Some great terroir-driven wines: saltiness, acidity, very complex.’ Andrea Briccarello, team leader

‘Two lovely Gewürztraminers, and both different. Good winemaking.’ Nigel Lister, team leader
